Anti-Semitism Conference Held in Vienna

An international conference to address the issue of anti-Semitism was held this week in Vienna, under the auspices of the European Jewish Congress and hosted by Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz. The conference produced, among other things, a list of recommendations to address the problem, with input coming from a variety of legal and academic experts in Europe, Israel and the US.

“Antisemitism and anti-Zionism are getting blurred, but they are two sides of the same coin,” Kurz said during his opening address. “As Austrians, we have to be honest when we look back at our past – as Austria was not only a victim but also a perpetrator – but we must also look ahead to the future. We can’t undo history, but we can do justice to our history.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also addressed the conference via video

Sentence Handed Down in Hoax Bomb Threat Case

The Tel Aviv District Court handed down a sentence of 10 years in jail Thursday morning to a minor who was convicted late last year for making more than 2,000 fake telephone threats against Jewish institutions, airports and police stations, mostly in the US but also in other countries. Legal analysts speculated that the US might seek to extradite the teenager, about whom little is publicly known other than his family’s residence in the city of Ashkelon.

Academic Boycott of Israel Suffers Another Defeat

The movement to Boycott, Divest and Sanction (BDS) Israel suffered another defeat this week when the University of Haifa and East China Normal University (ECNU) launched a new joint campus. The Joint Translational Science and Technology Research Institute, located at Shanghai’s Zizhu International Education Park will conduct research into biomedicine, neuroscience and environmental sciences. “This is a remarkable moment of combining forces between the great Chinese nation and the start-up nation of Israel,” said Education Minister Naftali Bennett.
