Iran Launches Ballistic Missiles at IS in Syria
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) fired missiles over northern Iraq and targeting  positions of the Islamic State (IS) terror militia in eastern Syria on Sunday as part of Iran’s response to a recent IS-claimed attack which killed 18 people in Teheran last week. An IRGC statement that the missiles killed large numbers of IS personnel and destroyed their equipment could not be independently confirmed, but analysts noted that regardless of their effect, the firing of such weapons by Iran into Syria marks a major strategic milestone in the ever-increasing intensity of the conflict.

In related news, a US Navy F/A-18E Super Hornet jet shot down an SU-22 bomber of the air force loyal to Syria’s Assad regime on Sunday to prevent it from attacking US-allied militias, marking the first US military air-to-air victory since 1999 and marking yet another milestone in the Syrian conflict following a US shoot-down of an armed Syrian drone on 8 June. It also ratcheted up already tense relations between the US and Assad’s allies in Moscow.

“The Coalition's mission is to defeat ISIS in Iraq and Syria,” the U.S. task force in charge of operations in Syria and Iraq announced on Sunday. “The Coalition does not seek to fight Syrian regime, Russian, or pro-regime forces partnered with them, but will not hesitate to defend Coalition or partner forces from any threat.”

Finally, in another regional development of the weekend, naval forces from Iran and China held joint training exercises on Sunday in the Persian Gulf. The drills came a day after US Naval forces held a similar drill with Qatari naval forces in the same body of water.

Israelis Sports Fans Have Much to Cheer About
Israel’s Paralympic rowing team won bronze in the 2,000 meter race of the World Cup event on Saturday in Poznan, Poland, coming in right behind teams from France and Ukraine. The team, which includes wounded IDF veterans, is now looking forward to competing at the world championships in Sarasota Florida in September. In other sports news, a group of NFL Hall of Famers touring Israel this week held an event on Sunday in Jerusalem to meet and greet local fans.

“This is my second time in Israel and the whole experience has been wonderful,” said legendary quarterback Joe Montana. “The people here are so amazing and it gets to the point where you start to understand how much it feels like a family wherever you go.”

Jordanian King Receives Clerics from Jerusalem
A delegation of officials from Jerusalem’s traditional Christians churches and Moslem clerics met with Jordanian King Abdullah on Sunday, during which the King re-iterated his support for their communities against what was characterized as “Israeli brutality and aggression” and to continue working for the establishment of a Palestinian State with eastern Jerusalem as its political capital. He also promised to continue demanding that Israel cease what he called attempts to “Judaize” Jerusalem. The assembled clerics warmly applauded these remarks.

Hapoel Jerusalem  Wins Basketball Championship
Hapoel Jerusalem’s players, coaches and fans were busy all weekend celebrating the club’s victory over Maccabi Haifa in the BSL championship series last Thursday evening. Several changes to the coaching and playing roster are expected in the coming weeks as fans look forward to next year’s season.
