Iranian leaders issue white-hot rhetoric

Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei added some fuel to the rhetorical fire on Wednesday when he made a speech before veterans of the Iran-Iraq War in which he declared his confidence that "the fake Zionist (regime) will disappear from the landscape of geography” adding that “the light of hope will shine on the Palestinian issue, and this Islamic land will certainly be returned to the Palestinian nation." Also on Wednesday, Brig.- Gen. Gholamreza Jalali, gave a speech in which he declared that "no other way exists apart from resolve and strength to completely eliminate the aggressive nature and to destroy Israel." An Israeli official responded that the comments were a "reaffirmation of what we continually hear from the Iranian leadership. The Iranians use unequivocal language, and their words speak for themselves."

Meanwhile, Israel’s outgoing Home Front Command chief, Matan Vilnai, gave an interview with the daily Maariv newspaper on Wednesday in which he declared that the Jewish State is fully prepared for a multi-front war which might erupt following an Israeli strike on Iran, and that Israel can sustain operations for as long as 30 days.

“The assessments are for a war that will last 30 days on a number of fronts,” he said, adding a reiteration of contemporary estimates that Israel would suffer approximately 500 people killed in such a conflict. “It could be that there will be less fatalities, but it could be there will be more, that is the scenario that we are preparing for according to the best experts.”

“I can say in the most authoritative manner that the home front is ready as never before in the country’s history,” he concluded. “The only question is if a clash is necessary. War is something that is better to postpone and weigh carefully. I don’t want to be dragged into an argument, but I say that the United States is our greatest friend and we must always coordinate such things with it.”

Elsewhere, the oil sheikdoms of the Persian Gulf are also making feverish preparations for a possible clash with the Islamic Republic, recently expressing interest in buying large quantities of the most advanced American air defense technology as well as large quantities of other military equipment.
